Pulmonary Cement Embolism Following Percutaneous Vertebroplasty: A Case Report, Physiopathology and Literature Review

چکیده
Vertebroplasty is a percutaneous and efficient technic for treatment of painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, traumatic vertebral fractures or myeloma fractures [1,2]. The first vertebroplasty was performed by Galibert in 1984 so as to treat a vertebral angioma in C2. Vertebroplasty consists in cement injection in the vertebral body of the painful vertebra [3]. Although this procedure seems to be efficient to decrease the pain and to improve the functional recovery of patients, there are complications such as same level re-fracture, radicular injuries, and cement embolism [4]. Majority of these complications are secondary to cement leakages and/or a bad filling of the vertebral body. Pulmonary cement embolism are under-estimated because many of them are asymptomatic or can become symptomatic many years after the vertebroplasty [5].

Case Report Surgical retrieval pulmonary and inferior vena cava embolism caused by cement leakage after percutaneous vertebroplasty: case report and literature review
Osteoporotic vertebral fracture is becoming increasingly risk factor of the aging population. Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a widely used treatment for the vertebral fracture. However this procedure may carry complication about cement leakage. Here we report a case of a 66-year-old woman who had developed the inferior vena cava and pulmonary embolism after PVP with bone cement leakage. This pa...

We present a case of a 41-year-old man with symptomatic pulmonary cement embolism following percutaneous vertebral augmentation, which was successfully retrieved via a percutaneous endovascular approach, a novel technique with only two prior cases reported. Cement leakage, including venous embolization of cement into the cardiopulmonary circulation, is a known potential complication following p...
متن کاملAsymptomatic Bone Cement Pulmonary Embolism after Vertebroplasty: Case Report and Literature Review
Introduction. Acrylic cement pulmonary embolism is a potentially serious complication following vertebroplasty. Case Report. A 70-year-old male patient was treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty for osteoporotic nontraumatic vertebral collapse of L5-S1. Asymptomatic pulmonary cement embolism was detected on routine postoperative chest radiogram and the patient was treated with enoxaparin, amo...
متن کاملPulmonary Cement Embolism following Percutaneous Vertebroplasty
Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a minimal invasive procedure that is applied for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. During vertebroplasty, the leakage of bone cement outside the vertebral body leads to pulmonary cement embolism, which is a serious complication of this procedure. Here we report a 48-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea after percutaneous vert...

UNLABELLED Background Context. Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure most commonly used for the treatment of vertebral compression fractures. Although it is relatively safe, complications have been reported over time. Among those complications, massive cement pulmonary embolism is considered a rare complication. Here we report a case of massive diffuse cement pulmonary embolism follo...
